Laelia dayana (Syn. Cattleya bicalhoi)
Laelia dayana (Syn. Cattleya bicalhoi)
Miniature Laelia (Cattleya) species.
One of a handful of species in the “pumila” group, Laelia dayana (now technicallyCattleya bicalhoi) is among the group of “Brazilian Laelias” with small plants and relatively large flowers. This particular species is known for its striking lip, with its vivid purple coloring and venation.
Plants bloom when the new growth is produced (typically around summer and fall) and may bloom twice a year or more. A distinctive feature of the Laelias in this group, buds emerge from the new growth itself, sometimes cradled by the newly forming leaf, rather than from a sheath.
Grown from seed.
Plants Available: The plant available is the plant pictured in the 4” net pot (white flower, pink lip).
Orchid Care: An adaptable plant. This species grows naturally in the tropical forests around Rio de Janeiro at elevations around 3,000 feet. It also grows and blooms happily in cultivation in subtropical climes at sea level.
Grow in bright, indirect light (Think: light level under a thick tropical forest canopy) with high humidity and good air circulation. Plants should be watered heavily while actively growing, but roots must dry rapidly afterward. Reduce water gradually in the fall and keep plants slightly drier during the cooler months.
Tolerant of a range of temperatures. In winter in the natural habitat, plants may be exposed to temperatures near freezing. In cultivation, we routinely observe summer temperatures in the 90s in the growing environment.
