Dendrobium crumenatum
Dendrobium crumenatum
Commonly known as the "Dove Orchid,” “Pigeon Orchid,” and “Thunderstorm Orchid.”
Easy growing Dendrobium species that blooms in sprays of fragrant small white flowers that, to some, resemble small white birds. Den. crumenatum takes its other name, “Thunderstorm Orchid,” from its propensity to flower in conjunction with the rain and changes in barometric pressure and temperature these weather systems bring.
Makes great orchid for the yard in subtropical and tropical climes—e.g., mount it on the trunk of a mature oak, in the crook of a branch, or anywhere the plant will get bright, diffused light and plenty of water during the growing season (spring, summer). Blooms are fairly short-lived, usually lasting only a few days, but plants are free-flowering and may bloom multiple times a year, particularly during the rainy season in Florida.
Grown from seed.
Plants Available: See plant selection dropdown for current options.
Orchid Care: Grow in bright, diffused light with moderate to high humidity and good air circulation. Some direct morning sun is okay. Plants grow well when mounted and are versatile in this respect—mount on driftwood, cedar slabs, teak baskets, oaks, or coconut and other palms. When grown bareroot, without media as our plants are, Den. crumenatum can be kept alongside Vandas and given similar care.
